Superintendent Hofmeister announces $837,000 in grants for AVID schools

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma State Department of Education recently awarded grants totaling $837,000 to selected Oklahoma schools for Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). The program allows schools to teach college-readiness courses, helping close the achievement gap by preparing all students for the demands of college and the workplace.
“AVID is a tremendous program with a proven track record of success,”said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister. “I congratulate the Oklahoma schools that have worked hard to offer AVID to their students, particularly traditionally underrepresented schoolchildren who are middle performing or are likely the first generation in their families to attend college.”
The grant funds were approved by the State Board of Education in late February. As the grants are renewable, a number of schools receiving awards this year are in their second or third year of implementing AVID.
The following received Year 1 grants of $40,000 each:
* Carnegie High School (Carnegie Public Schools)
* Chickasha Middle School (Chickasha Public Schools)
* Grove Middle School (Grove Public Schools)
* Jay Middle School (Jay Public Schools)
* Alice Robertson Junior High School (Muskogee Public Schools)
* Western Oaks Middle School (Putnam City Public Schools)
* Sallisaw Middle School (Sallisaw Public Schools)
* Wilburton Middle School (Wilburton Public Schools)
* Wilburton High School (Wilburton Public Schools)
The following received Year 2 grants of $35,000 each:
* Ada Middle School (Ada Public Schools)
* Anadarko Middle School (Anadarko Public Schools)
* Capitol Hill High School (Oklahoma City Public Schools)
* Jefferson Middle School (Oklahoma City Public Schools)
* Putnam City West High School (Putnam City Public Schools)
Receiving a Year 2 grant of $30,000 was Caney Valley Middle School (Caney Valley Public Schools)
The following received Year 2 grants of $14,000 each:
* Cherokee Elementary School (Muskogee Public Schools)
* Harris Jobe Elementary School (Muskogee Public Schools)
* Whittier Elementary School (Muskogee Public Schools)
The following received Year 3 grants of $20,000 each:
* Ada High School (Ada Public Schools)
* Choctaw High School (Choctaw-Nicoma Park Public Schools)
* Dove Science Academy (Discovery School of Tulsa)
* Grove High School (Grove Public Schools)
* Norman North High School (Norman Public Schools)
* Norman High School (Norman Public Schools)
* Mayfield Middle School (Putnam City Public Schools)
* McAlester High School (McAlester Public Schools)
* Puterbaugh Middle School (McAlester Public Schools)
* Thackerville High School (Thackerville Public Schools)
The following schools received Year 3 grants of $15,000 each:
* Millwood High School (Millwood Public Schools)
* Millwood Middle/Elementary School (Millwood Public Schools)
AVID impacts more than 800,000 students, according to a state Education Department press release.
