GivingTuesday: Please support the Oklahoma Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (OK-CADP)

Oklahoma City – I write to ask for donations to the Oklahoma Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (OK-CADP) on Giving Tuesday, November 29, 2022.

After a six-year moratorium, Oklahoma has executed seven men in the past 13 months and has scheduled 22 more executions in the next 25 months. Oklahoma leads the nation in execution rate per capita.

OK-CADP seeks to lift up the humanity of the prisoners on death row, holding press conferences before each clemency hearing to tell the prisoner’s story and writing letters to the members of the Pardon and Parole Board.

We hold vigils at the Governor’s Mansion and at Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester during each execution that concludes with a circle prayer. We also have established a burial fund to cover cremation costs for prisoners whose families cannot pay this expense.

We see a disturbing pattern in the seven executions in the last 13 months: all but two of the condemned men have grown up in abject poverty, were physically abused by their parents, were introduced to drugs and alcohol at an early age by family members, and have suffered mental illness and brain damage. These men are the least of these, not the worst of the worst.

Please help us to continue in our quest to stand in solidarity with the prisoners and abolish the death penalty in Oklahoma by lending your support.

Giving Tuesday, (#GivingTuesday on Nov. 29) is an international day of giving at the beginning of the holiday season. Giving Tuesday was co-founded in 2012 by the United Nations Foundation as a response to commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season.

A donation of $25, $50, $100, $250, $500, or whatever amount you can give, will help us expand the reach of our public education campaign about why Oklahoma should abolish the death penalty.

Plans include creating new chapters across the state, participating in pardon and parole hearings, and continuing to work to abolish the death penalty in Oklahoma.
