To the Editor:
It may not feel like it now, but spring is just around the corner; and with it, spring allergies. Although a bit later than normal, predictions for this allergy season suggest that it is going to be one of the worst in our state’s history. Now, more than ever, it is essential that Oklahomans have affordable access to popular over-the-counter medicine containing pseudoephedrine (PSE).
The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) recently ranked Oklahoma City as the ninth worst location in the country for spring allergies. As someone who is all too familiar with the stuffy nose and watery eyes of spring, I don’t doubt it. Luckily, knowing what to expect means I’m better at treating the problem both for my child and myself.
The recent allergy rankings offer our lawmakers an important reminder going forward. When it comes to a proposal that would force me to see a doctor before obtaining common medicines, it’s clear that such a policy would burden thousands of honest Oklahomans without really addressing the problem of meth abuse and production.
Oklahomans deserved targeted solutions to the problem, not more government interference.
