OKLAHOMA CITY – Governor Mary Fallin on Friday (September 1) asked all Oklahomans to set aside time this Sunday, Sept. 3, to pray for the victims of Tropical Depression Harvey as well as for first responders from Oklahoma and throughout the country who are offering assistance.
A week after Hurricane Harvey slammed into Texas, millions of people across the Gulf Coast struggle with being trapped in their homes or forced to flee because of torrential rains caused by the storm.
The governor issued a proclamation (https://www.sos.ok.gov/documents/proclamations/40377.pdf) urging Oklahomans “to join with Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texans of all faiths and religious traditions to offer prayers for those who have lost loved ones and for the safety of our first responders, public safety officers, military personnel, volunteers, and for the restoration of lives and communities in Texas.”
“I encourage Oklahomans of all faiths to join me this Sunday in offering their prayers for storm victims and our first responders,” Fallin said in a press release sent to CapitolBeatOK and other news organizations.
“The power of prayer is a wonderful thing, and I would ask every Oklahoman to look to a greater power this weekend.”
Harvey’s destruction has resulted in unparalleled flooding and tragic loss of life.
But Fallin said in her proclamation that “the goodness of the American people has brought us scenes of neighbor helping neighbor and an outpouring of support and resources from all over our great nation.”
She said Oklahomans are known for their solid sense of community, selfless spirit and determination, often referred to as “The Oklahoma Standard.”
“I am proud of the many residents and Oklahoma companies embodying that spirit by responding to the needs of those in Texas and Louisiana,” Fallin said.
